Orientation Directions
The NIH Orientation is held in building 31 or building 45 on the NIH campus (see map
). For security purposes, you will be required to enter through building 66, the NIH Gateway Center, and provide a government issued photo identification and submit to a personal inspection. Visitor information is available at http://www.nih.gov/about/visitor/. This website includes security information, driving directions, a map of the Bethesda area, visitor maps, visitor parking information, public transportation information, NIH Campus Shuttle schedules, and a list of NIH facilities.
Via Metrorail
We recommend that you take the Metro Red Line to the Medical Center station which is located at the southwest corner of Rockville Pike and South Drive. Please go to http://www.wmata.com
for information on Metro schedules and rates. From the Medical Center Metro, follow the signs to the NIH entrance and go to the Gateway Center (Building 66) to obtain a visitor pass.
From Baltimore and Points North of Washington, DC
Take I-95 south towards Washington, DC. At I-495 (Capital Beltway), proceed west towards Silver Spring/Bethesda. From the Beltway (I-495), take Exit 34 (Route 355, or Wisconsin Avenue/Rockville Pike), and proceed south towards Washington/Bethesda. Just past the fifth traffic light (South Drive), turn right onto NIH Gateway Drive, and follow the signs to visitor's parking (MLP-11).
From Virginia and Points South of Washington, DC
Take I-95 north toward Washington, DC. At I-495 (Capital Beltway), head north toward Silver Spring/Bethesda. From the Beltway (I-495), take Exit 34 (Route 355, or Wisconsin Avenue/Rockville Pike), and proceed south towards Washington/Bethesda. Just past the fifth traffic light (South Drive), turn right onto NIH Gateway Drive, and follow the signs to visitor's parking (MLP-11).
From Frederick and Points North of Rockville, MD
From either I-70 or US-15 South, merge onto I-270 South toward Washington, DC. Where I-270 and I-495 split, bare left and follow the signs toward I-495 East toward College Park and Silver Spring. Take the Route 355 South exit toward Bethesda. There is no exit number for this exit, but it will be in your far left lane (the HOV lane turns into it). Just past the fifth traffic light (South Drive), turn right onto NIH Gateway Drive, and follow the signs to visitor's parking (MLP-11).
NIH Visitor’s Entrance
If you choose to drive you will be required to enter the NIH campus through the visitor entrance located at Rockville Pike and NIH Gateway Drive. To view a map of the Gateway Center go to [HERE]. When you turn onto NIH Gateway Drive, make sure you stay to your left and park at MLP-11. If you drive into the car inspection area, you have gone too far. Validation will be provided at the New Employee Orientation for the MLP-11 parking garage (near the Gateway Center) ONLY. We do not have validation for any other parking areas. After you park, follow the signs to the NIH entrance and enter the Gateway Center to obtain a visitor pass.
Directions to the NIH New Employee Orientation Conference Area
If the orientation is located in building 45, you should follow the signs in the visitor’s center to building 45. If the orientation is located in building 31, you should take the NIH Campus Shuttle (Red Line) from the Metro to the designated orientation area. For your convenience, the NIH Shuttle Service picks up at the circle directly in front of the Gateway center. Shuttle maps and schedules are available to you in the Gateway center. You should take the NIH Campus Shuttle (Red Line) from the Metro to the designated orientation area.
