NIH Dismissal and Closure Resources and Guides

Should severe weather conditions or an emergency situation affect normal operations at the NIH, announcements to alert employees of such changes will be made. The following resources are in place to ensure that you are able to access emergency information and instructions, and are prepared to take appropriate action if changes in operating status affect you or your employees.

Telework and ITAS

Tier II employees with ad hoc telework agreements who choose to telework when the NIH is under an unscheduled leave, delayed arrival, or early departure status must request ad hoc telework in ITAS before the end of the pay period. For more information on how to request telework visit ITAS.

For more information on basic regulatory and policy guidance on the various leave programs available to NIH civilian employees in an emergency including accrued leave, leave without pay, and many others, please view the NIH Leave Guide.

Emergency Communications Resources

  • Email
    • Email will be sent notifying all staff of changes in operating status, to check your email off campus, visit mail.nih.gov.
  • Alert NIH (Send Word Now)
    • Alert NIH is a managed communications service that connects people instantly anytime, anywhere, across any device – cell phone, home phone, work phone, email, or pager. This system has the ability to notify employees and contractors (via text, email, phone and fax) of an emergency or inclement weather-related event and provide specific information on reporting status or emergency instructions. Your government communications devices (work phone, email, blackberry, cell phone, etc.) are already in AlertNIH, but can choose to receive messages on your personal devices (home phone, cell phone, home email) as well by updating your NIH Enterprise Directory (NED) profile. To ensure the system can notify you in the event of a closure or dismissal, check your NED profile and update your personal contact information as desired.
