NIH Work/Life Center logoThe NIH Work/Life Center (WLC) was established to assist employees with their efforts to better manage their complex personal and professional lives. In creating an environment sensitive to and supportive of a healthy work/life balance, the NIH enables employees to contribute their best efforts to the mission and actively demonstrates that it values its workforce as one of its greatest assets. Both Federal and non-Federal organizations have recognized the NIH, through its work/life program, for its inclusive culture, progressive policies and programs, and active community involvement and corporate citizenship.

Services provided by the Work/Life Center are FREE and available to all NIH employees.

The examples below provide information about the work/life assistance available at NIH. By appointment, you can meet confidentially with a work/life specialist to discuss the flexibilities and options available to you. Let us help you plan strategies and find resources that will bring your life back into balance.

Examples

Identifying Federal programs and policies that meet your needs for flexibility, including Alternative Work Schedules, Telecommuting, Part-Time Employment, Job Sharing, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Federal Employees Family Friendly Leave Act, Sick Leave for Adoption, Leave for Bone-Marrow or Organ Donation, and the Volunteer Leave Transfer Program.

Locating resources and services in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and nationwide for aging relatives, child care, and legal and financial matters.

  • The WLC offers a broad range of reference materials, available for 2-week rental periods, on topics such as career planning, work and family life, estate planning, childcare, elder care, and personal finance. Resources & Referral Service

  • The ORS, Division of Amenities at NIH has contracted with LifeWork Strategies, Inc. to provide referrals to many types of alternative childcare services and resources only. This highly personalized professional service is available at no cost to all NIH employees by calling 1-800-777-1720 between the hours of 9:00 am until 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
