NIH Telework Program

Are you tired of driving around looking for a parking space? Spending hours in traffic jams on the beltway? Not getting your project completed because of constant interruptions? Telework can be a good solution for these and many other issues, whether you work from home or a telework center, and whether you do so every day, once a week, once a month, or a few times a year.

The resources on this website will help you explore telework at NIH, decide whether telework is a good option for you or your employees, and learn more about working with and managing teleworkers.

The US Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has a guide for managers, employees, and telework coordinators that includes guidance on supervisory issues, performance appraisal, and other topics of interest to Federal managers.

NIH conducted a telework pilot project in 2001. For that project, a telework consultant created toolkits for teleworkers and managers that contain a great deal of useful general information:

Resources for NIH Teleworkers

  • Email: You can set up access to your NIH e-mail through the NIH Portal.
    • Log on using your regular username and password (the same as you use for your computer at work). Teleworkers must be aware of security concerns when accessing the NIH network from a remote computer, particularly so when handling sensitive/confidential information.
  • For information about the various types of remote access supported by the Center for Information Technology at NIH, including cable modem, DSL, and Parachute, visit http://remoteaccess.nih.gov.
  • Computer training: CIT's Training Center offers various courses relevant to telework, including “Basic Security – Protect Your PC” and “Introduction to Remote Access at NIH.”
  • Remote access users must also comply with NIH's Remote Access Policy.
  • CIT's Web Collaboration Services is a tool that provides rich media communication for instant virtual informal and formal meetings with colleagues or collaborators across the globe. Visit Connect at http://webcollaboration.nih.gov.

Workshops - Taking Telework to the Next Level

  • Planning for new telework workshops is underway. Please check back for updates.
  • There are several seminars hosted by the NIH Work/Life Center that are highly encouraged for teleworkers and their managers. They provide information on topics that can help ensure the telework experience is successful for both parties, e.g., coaching, business etiquette, tips for teams, communications, and managing multiple priorities, to name a few. These are archived on the NIH videocast website at http://videocast.nih.gov.
  • Please check back for updates, or send an e-mail to NIH Telework.
